What are the rules for sheds in Troy, Michigan?
Sheds in Troy fall under the accessory supplemental building class, which is capped at 200 sq ft total per lot (Section 7.03.B.3). The rules:
- Total size. All supplemental buildings combined may not exceed 200 sq ft.
- Location. Not in any front yard, and at least 6 ft from side and rear lot lines.
- Height. One story and 14 ft maximum.
A permit is required when a shed exceeds 36 sq ft in area or 4 ft in height (Section 7.03.A.2). A small shed under both thresholds needs no permit, but the placement rules still apply.
A larger storage building is treated as a detached accessory building instead, with its own size formula and a rear-yard-only requirement (Section 7.03.B.2). If you are unsure which class your project falls in, call the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
