How close to the property line can a detached garage or shed be in Troy?
Six feet. Detached garages must sit at least 6 ft from side and rear lot lines, and at least 10 ft from the main building (Section 7.03.B.2.d). Sheds in the supplemental class follow the same 6 ft setback from side and rear lines (Section 7.03.B.3).
Location rules also apply:
- Detached garages are allowed in the rear yard only (Section 7.03.B.2.a).
- Sheds may not be placed in any front yard (Section 7.03.B.3).
- Swimming pools need 6 ft from property lines to the pool wall and 5 ft from any building (Section 7.03.B.4).
A permit is required for any accessory building over 36 sq ft or taller than 4 ft (Section 7.03.A.2). If your survey is unclear or an easement crosses the yard, check with the Planning Department at 248-524-3364 before you build.
