Can I run a daycare from my home in Troy, Michigan?

A family day care home is permitted by right in Troy's one-family residential districts (Section 4.21). If your operation fits the family day care home category, no special zoning approval is needed.

Larger home-based daycare is a different story, and an odd one. The use table lists group day care homes as not permitted in every district (Section 4.21). That treatment is unusual and sits in tension with how Michigan licenses these homes, so do not rely on the table alone. Confirm how the city treats group day care homes with the Planning Department at 248-524-3364 before committing to one.

For comparison, full day care centers are a special use in residential districts, requiring Planning Commission approval after a public hearing (Sections 4.21, 9.02.D).

State licensing through Michigan applies separately from zoning, so plan on satisfying both.
