Can I keep chickens in Macomb Township?

Only on agricultural-scale land. Fowl raising is a permitted agricultural use in the AG district, where the minimum land for farm uses is 5 acres (Sec. 10.0402.A.3-4), and the R-1-S district carries the AG use list with the same standards (Sec. 10.0502). Keeping fowl for commercial purposes falls under the same provisions, housed and fenced so as not to become a nuisance (Sec. 10.0402.A.4).

In the R-1-E and R-1 single-family districts, chickens are out twice over: fowl raising is expressly prohibited (Sec. 10.0602.A), and no livestock may be kept in R-1-E, R-1, or any of the R-2 and R-3 districts; only domestic pets not used for commercial or breeding purposes are allowed (Sec. 10.0602.B; Sec. 10.0702.B). So a backyard coop on a subdivision lot is not permitted under the ordinance as written. If your parcel is zoned AG or R-1-S, check your acreage against the 5 acre farm-use minimum with the Planning Department.
