Are short-term rentals allowed in Macomb Township?
The ordinance is silent. As of the July 2026 review of the zoning ordinance (Supp. No. 35) and the Code of Ordinances (Supp. No. 62), Macomb Township has no section regulating short-term rentals, no rental licensing chapter, and no minimum lease term for dwellings. The zoning ordinance defines related but distinct uses it does regulate: boarding houses, tourist homes, and bed and breakfasts, the last a special land use in the AG district with an owner-occupancy requirement (Sec. 10.0403.N).
Silence is not blanket permission. Whether renting a whole house by the night is a permitted residential use, or instead an unlisted commercial use of a dwelling, is an interpretation call that belongs to the township, and Michigan townships have litigated both readings. An owner considering it should ask the Planning Department in writing before listing a property, and watch for amendments, since STR ordinances are actively being adopted across Macomb County communities.
