What are the rules for yard signs in Troy, Michigan?

Yard signs in Troy fall under the temporary sign rules, and no permit is needed (City Code § 85.03.02). The limits:

  • Each sign may be up to 6 square feet
  • All temporary signs on a site may total 14 square feet
  • Maximum height is 42 inches above grade
  • Signs may not be in the right-of-way or on utility poles
  • Signs must be at least 20 feet from the traveled road

Temporary signs must come down within 60 days, with an exception for for-sale and for-lease signs (City Code § 85.03.02).

The most common mistake is placement. The strip between the sidewalk and the street is usually right-of-way, and signs there are prohibited (City Code § 85.01.05). Keep signs on your own property, behind the right-of-way line, and within the size and height limits. Questions can go to the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
