What are the rules for political signs in Troy, Michigan?
Political signs in Troy follow the same temporary sign framework as any other yard sign. The city regulates size and placement, not the message (City Code § 85.03.02).
The limits:
- Up to 6 square feet per sign
- Up to 14 square feet aggregate for all temporary signs on a site
- Maximum 42 inches above grade
- No permit required
- Not in the right-of-way and not on utility poles
- At least 20 feet from the traveled road
Temporary signs must be removed within 60 days (City Code § 85.03.02). In practice, that means a campaign sign should come down within that window.
Signs placed in the right-of-way are prohibited and subject to removal, and that includes the grass strip along the street in front of most homes (City Code § 85.01.05). Keep signs on private property with the owner's permission. For questions, call the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
