What signs are prohibited in Troy, Michigan?
Troy prohibits several categories of signs in every district (City Code § 85.01.05):
- Signs in the right-of-way. This includes the strip between sidewalk and street in front of most properties.
- Roof projecting signs.
- Flashing or intermittent illumination. Steady illumination is treated differently from blinking or strobing displays.
- Off-premise commercial signs. A business cannot advertise on a sign located on someone else's property, in any district.
- Signs over 30 inches tall within the 25 foot corner sight triangle at street intersections, where visibility must be preserved.
These prohibitions apply regardless of whether a sign would otherwise meet size and height limits. A 6 square foot temporary sign is still illegal if it sits in the right-of-way.
If a sign decision goes against you, the sign ordinance provides an appeal process (City Code § 85.01.08). For questions about a specific sign, call the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
