All districts

Signs are City Code Chapter 85, separate from the zoning ordinance.

  • Temporary signs need no permit. Aggregate area is 14 square feet per site, individual signs at most 6 square feet, and the top at most 42 inches above grade. They may not sit in the right-of-way or on utility poles, and must stay at least 20 feet from the traveled road. Remove them within 60 days, except for-sale and lease signs (City Code § 85.03.02).
  • In residential districts, non-single-family uses such as subdivision entrances and institutions may have one sign up to 100 square feet. Ground signs in R districts max out at 12 feet high with a 10 foot setback (City Code § 85.02.05.C.1; Table 85.02.05). Single-family homes themselves rely on the temporary-sign allowance.
  • MF and UR sites may have one sign up to 100 square feet plus one up to 36 square feet, with no sign within 30 feet of an R-1 or RT line (City Code § 85.02.05.C.2).
  • Prohibited everywhere: signs in the right-of-way, roof projecting signs, flashing or intermittent illumination, off-premise commercial signs, and signs over 30 inches inside the 25 foot corner triangle (City Code § 85.01.05).
  • Sign appeals follow City Code § 85.01.08.
