Can I put up a for-sale sign in Troy, Michigan?
Yes. A for-sale sign is a temporary sign in Troy, and no permit is needed (City Code § 85.03.02).
The standard temporary sign limits apply:
- Up to 6 square feet per sign
- Up to 14 square feet aggregate for all temporary signs on the site
- Maximum 42 inches above grade
- Not in the right-of-way or on utility poles
- At least 20 feet from the traveled road
For-sale and for-lease signs get one meaningful break. Temporary signs ordinarily must be removed within 60 days, but for-sale and for-lease signs are excepted from that removal requirement (City Code § 85.03.02). The sign can stay up for the duration of the listing.
Placement is the main compliance point. Keep the sign on the property being sold, out of the right-of-way, which is prohibited territory for signs (City Code § 85.01.05). Questions can go to the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
