How much parking is required for a house in Troy, Michigan?
A house in Troy needs 2 parking spaces per dwelling unit, and the spaces must be on the premises, located on a parking strip, driveway, garage, or some combination of those (Table 13.06-A, Section 13.06.B.3). The same standard applies to two-family dwellings.
For multiple-family buildings, the requirement is 1 space per efficiency unit and 2 spaces per any other unit (Table 13.06-A).
Two related rules worth knowing:
- The surface must be concrete or asphalt. Gravel driveways are not allowed (Section 13.06.J.2).
- A standard space measures 9.5 feet by 19 feet when set at 90 degrees (Table 13.06-B).
Most houses satisfy the requirement easily with a driveway and garage. The rule matters most when converting a garage to living space, since the 2 spaces must remain on the property. Questions about a specific lot can go to the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
