Is a gravel driveway allowed in Troy, Michigan?
No. Troy requires all driveways and parking lots to be hard surfaced with concrete or asphalt, and gravel does not qualify (Section 13.06.J.2).
The ordinance allows one narrow alternative. Permeable pavers may be possible, but only for overflow or seasonal parking, and only on the recommendation of the City Engineer (Section 13.06.J.2). That option does not cover a primary residential driveway.
What this means in practice:
- A new driveway must be poured concrete or asphalt
- An existing gravel driveway cannot be extended in gravel
- Replacing a driveway means replacing it in a compliant material
Remember the parking spaces themselves must also be on the premises, on a parking strip, driveway, or garage (Section 13.06.B.3). If you believe your property presents a genuine hardship, the Zoning Board of Appeals is the variance route, but start by calling the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
