What are the rules for a for-sale sign in Rochester Hills?

For a single-family home, Table 134-9 A lists two temporary freestanding signs, each at most 6 square feet and 7 feet high, and two wall signs, each at most 2 square feet. However, § 134-9(b) limits temporary signs under 12 square feet to ONE per address. These provisions conflict; do not rely on the table alone to install multiple small signs without the City’s interpretation.

Temporary signs under 12 square feet are permit-exempt (§ 134-4(1)a.5). The general permit rule applies to non-exempt signs, including exactly 12 square feet; § 134-9(b)’s 30-day/four-times-year display rule expressly addresses signs over 12 square feet. Temporary wall signs/banners are limited to 30 total days/year and no continuous display over 14 days (§ 134-9(e)).

A for-sale/lease freestanding sign may remain during the listing. For residential lots greater than one acre, individual freestanding sign area may increase to 12 square feet. During the 60 days before through three days after a city-designated election with a ballot item, aggregate freestanding area may reach 64 square feet, but the individual-sign area limit remains.

Monument and permanent wall signs are not permitted at single-family dwellings (§§ 134-5–6); required address numbers and other specifically exempt sign categories are separate. Sign variances go to the Sign Board of Appeals (§ 134-12).
