Do I need a permit to build a fence in Troy, Michigan?
Yes. Fence permits in Troy are issued by the Building Department (City Code § 83-5).
Two conditions in the code matter:
- Grading first. No fence permit is issued before final lot grading approval (City Code § 83-5). On a newer home, the lot grading must be signed off before the fence goes up.
- Easements. A fence in an easement needs approval from the DPW Director (City Code § 83-5).
Fences are among the minor items the Zoning Administrator may review administratively (Section 8.03.C), so a standard fence does not involve a public hearing.
The fence itself must meet the height and type rules of City Code § 83-2(A): ornamental type, 6 ft maximum, and 30 inches in front of the front building setback line. For questions, call the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
