How tall can a fence be in Troy, Michigan?
Residential fences in Troy are limited to 6 ft (City Code § 83-2(A)). They must be an ornamental type such as metal, wood, or masonry.
The limit drops in two places:
- In front of the front building setback line: maximum 30 inches (City Code § 83-2(A)).
- At street intersections: nothing over 30 inches within the 25 ft sight triangle (Section 7.04). Front-yard fences must comply with this clearance rule (Section 7.05.B).
Qualifying corner lots may run a non-obscuring fence up to 48 inches along the common street line (City Code § 83-2(A)).
Fence heights can be waived by the Building Board of Appeals, and permits come from the Building Department (City Code § 83-5). If you are unsure where your front setback line falls, ask the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
