What are the fence rules for a corner lot in Troy?

Corner lots in Troy get a specific allowance. Where the lot has a required double front setback and a common rear-yard relationship with the lot behind it, a non-obscuring fence up to 48 inches is allowed along the common street line, running from the front setback line to the rear property line (City Code § 83-2(A)).

Two limits still apply:

  • Sight triangle. Nothing over 30 inches within the 25 ft sight triangle at the street intersection (Section 7.04).
  • In front of the setback line. The general 30 inch limit applies in front of the front building setback line (City Code § 83-2(A)).

Fence heights can be waived by the Building Board of Appeals. Whether your lot qualifies for the 48 inch allowance depends on how your rear yard relates to the neighboring lots, so confirm with the Planning Department at 248-524-3364.
