Are barbed wire or electric fences allowed in Troy?
Electrically charged fences are prohibited citywide in Troy (City Code § 83-4). There is no residential exception.
Barbed wire is prohibited in residential districts, with one narrow exception: it may be used to guard attractive nuisances, and only at a height of 6 ft or higher (City Code § 83-4).
For an ordinary home fence, the standard rules apply instead: ornamental type, 6 ft maximum height, 30 inches in front of the front building setback line, and a permit from the Building Department (City Code § 83-2(A), City Code § 83-5).
If you believe your situation fits the attractive nuisance exception, confirm with the city before installing anything. The Planning Department can point you to the right reviewer at 248-524-3364.
