What are the rules for yard signs and temporary signs at a Birmingham home?
Temporary signs at homes are governed by the residential temporary sign table (Sign Ordinance § 1.09, Table D). The general-purpose category is the private residence sign: up to 4 sq ft per side, displayed for one 90-day period in a year. That single annual window is the rule to plan around for political and other expressive yard signs; ask the city how it applies the window across election seasons.
Other categories run on their own clocks:
- Home improvement signs: 4 sq ft per side, one sign, up to 30 days while the work is underway
- Real estate signs: 4 sq ft per side, removed within 14 days of sale or lease
- Special event signs: up to 7 days
Cloth pennants and banners are prohibited (Sign Ordinance § 1.08). Questions about a specific display go to the Planning Division at 248-530-1850.
