How do I get a sign variance in Birmingham?
Sign variances go to the Board of Zoning Appeals. The BZA applies a practical difficulties standard and must make four findings before granting relief (Sign Ordinance § 2.06; § 8.01(F)(4)).
What to expect:
- You apply through the city, and the BZA hears the request; check the city's posted meeting schedule for hearing dates
- The burden is on you to show that the standard sign rules create a practical difficulty tied to your property, not just a preference for a bigger sign
- A BZA order lapses after 1 year unless you obtain a permit or establish the use (§ 8.01(G))
The ordinance does not state a filing deadline for appeals of sign decisions, so ask the city directly about timing rather than assuming one. The Planning Division can walk through the application requirements: 248-530-1850.
