What are the rules for a for-sale sign in Birmingham?
A for-sale sign at a Birmingham home may be 4 sq ft per side, 8 sq ft total, and up to 4 ft high (Sign Ordinance § 1.09, Table D). No permit is required for a real estate sign within those limits.
The clock matters as much as the size. The sign must be removed within 14 days after the property is sold or leased. Leaving a sold sign up past that window is a violation, so plan the takedown with your agent.
Related temporary categories in the same table:
- Subdivision advertising signs: up to 32 sq ft and 6 ft high
- Home improvement signs: 4 sq ft per side, one sign, up to 30 days
- Special event signs: up to 7 days
For anything beyond these allowances, the route is a variance from the Board of Zoning Appeals (Sign Ordinance § 2.06).
