What yard signs can I put up without a permit in Ferndale?

Several sign types need no permit at all under Section 8.04 of the zoning code. Signs in Ferndale are governed by Article 8 of the zoning code, not a separate sign chapter.

No-permit allowances:

  • Garage sale signs: up to 6 sq ft and 4 ft tall, one per lot, posted no more than 10 days before the sale and removed within 1 day after
  • Flags: up to 24 sq ft, two per dwelling unit or business
  • Nameplates: up to 4 sq ft
  • Window signs: up to 20% of the glass area
  • Holiday decorations: removed within 14 days after the holiday

Anything beyond these categories likely needs a sign permit under Section 8.03.D, and some sign types are prohibited outright under Section 8.06, including electronic message signs and inflatables. If you are unsure which category your sign falls into, call CED at 248-336-4370.
