Signs are Article 8 of the zoning code, not a separate chapter.
- No permit needed (Section 8.04): flags up to 24 square feet, two per dwelling unit or business; garage sale signs of 6 square feet and 4 feet, one per lot, up 10 days before the sale and down within 1 day; nameplates of 4 square feet; window signs up to 20 percent of the glass; holiday decorations down within 14 days.
- Temporary signs (Section 8.05): displayed under 30 days per calendar year, no illumination. A grand-opening banner may reach 16 square feet. A banner spanning the right-of-way needs City Council and/or MDOT approval.
- Permit signs (Section 8.03.D): wall signs up to 30 percent of the signable area or 50 square feet, whichever is less; monument signs up to 6 feet tall and 32 square feet (64 for multi-tenant); projecting signs 9 square feet; sandwich boards 3 feet and 6 square feet.
- Prohibited (Section 8.06): billboards and off-premises signs, electronic message signs, pole signs, roof signs, flashing or animated signs, balloons and inflatables, signs on trees, fences, or utility poles, home-based business signs other than a nameplate, and vehicle signs parked in view over 12 hours.
Sign appeals go to the Board of Zoning Appeals (Section 8.09; Article 19).
