What signs are prohibited in Ferndale?
Section 8.06 of the zoning code bans several sign types outright, in every district. No permit or variance path is offered for these in the use rules.
Prohibited signs include:
- Electronic message signs, including changeable digital displays
- Pole signs
- Billboards and other off-premises signs
- Roof signs
- Flashing or animated signs
- Balloons and inflatables
- Signs attached to trees, fences, or utility poles
- Home-based business signs other than a nameplate
- Vehicle signs on vehicles parked more than 12 hours
The electronic message sign ban is worth flagging because digital reader boards are common in nearby communities; in Ferndale they are not allowed. Sign appeals go to the Board of Zoning Appeals under Section 8.09; note the code's cross-reference there to Article 17 is an error, the BZA is established in Article 19.
