How long can temporary signs stay up in Ferndale?
Less than 30 days per calendar year. Section 8.05 of the zoning code limits temporary signs to display for under 30 days in any calendar year, total. That is a yearly budget, not a per-sign clock, so plan campaigns accordingly.
Other temporary sign rules:
- A grand-opening banner may be up to 16 sq ft
- Banners spanning the right-of-way need City Council and/or MDOT approval
- Temporary signs may not be illuminated
Keep temporary signs distinct from the no-permit categories in Section 8.04, such as garage sale signs, which have their own shorter posting windows, and from prohibited types in Section 8.06, such as inflatables and flashing signs, which are never allowed even temporarily.
If an event needs signage beyond these limits, talk to CED at 248-336-4370 about what permits or approvals would apply.
