What roof style does my garage or shed need in Royal Oak?

Your garage or shed roof must be a mansard, hip, gambrel, or gable design, and it must be compatible with the house it serves (§ 770-22A(12)). Those four styles are the listed options. A flat roof is not among them, so a flat-roofed design does not meet the rule as written.

The compatibility half of the standard involves judgment. The code does not define what makes an accessory roof compatible with a dwelling, so the city weighs that when it reviews your plans.

Two related limits apply to the same building:

  • Height is capped at 13 feet, or up to 15 feet with added setback (§ 770-22A(7)).
  • Width is capped at 50% of the principal facade (§ 770-22A(8)).

If your design sits near the line on style or compatibility, run it past the planning division at 248-246-3280 before you buy materials.
