How tall can a detached garage or shed be in Royal Oak?
13 feet is the standard limit for a detached garage or shed (§ 770-22A(7)). The code allows up to 15 feet, but each extra foot of height requires one extra foot of setback beyond the normal distance from the lot lines (§ 770-22A(7)).
The baseline setback for a building entirely in the rear yard is 3 feet from the rear and side lines (§ 770-22A(4)), so a 15-foot structure would need at least 5 feet.
Height is not the only design control. The roof must be a mansard, hip, gambrel, or gable design compatible with the house (§ 770-22A(12)), and the building may be no wider than 50% of the principal facade (§ 770-22A(8)).
How the city measures height to the 13-foot mark is worth confirming before you order trusses. Call the planning division at 248-246-3280 with your drawings.
