How far does a shed have to be from the property line in Birmingham, MI?
A shed must be at least 3 feet from any lot line in Birmingham (§ 4.03). It also must be at least 10 feet from the principal building, and it can only go in the rear open space. Sheds are prohibited in the required front and side open space.
Two placements get special treatment (§ 4.03):
- Corner lots: keep the shed at least 5 feet from the rear lot line.
- Through lots (street at front and rear): the shed must sit the full front-setback distance from the street-abutting rear line.
A shed also cannot sit closer to a neighbor's house than the sum of the minimum side setbacks, and it counts toward the combined accessory-structure size cap of 10% of lot area or 600/550/500 square feet by district, whichever is less (§ 4.03). Confirm your lot's specifics with the Planning Division at 248-530-1850.
