What are the rules for an attached garage in Birmingham, MI?
An attached garage in Birmingham may take up no more than 50% of the street-facing width of the house (§ 4.75). The standard is aimed at keeping garages from dominating the front of the home.
Two more requirements apply (§ 4.75):
- The garage must be set back at least 5 feet behind the front facade of the house.
- Garage doors are limited to a maximum width of 9 feet each.
These rules apply to the attached garage as part of the principal building, so the house setback, height, and lot coverage standards of your district govern the structure as a whole. A detached garage follows a different set of rules under § 4.03, including rear-yard placement and its own size cap.
