How many parking spaces are required for a house in Royal Oak?

Two off-street spaces per dwelling unit. The parking table requires 2 spaces per unit for one-family, two-family, and multiple-family dwellings (§ 770-107). Dwellings in the Central Business District are the exception at 1.5 spaces per unit, and most non-residential CBD uses require no off-street parking at all (§ 770-106E).

Location rules matter as much as the count:

  • For one- and two-family homes, parking belongs in the side or rear yard on the same lot (§ 770-105F(1))
  • Front-yard parking is allowed only with an Engineering Department permit for a qualifying horseshoe or T-shaped driveway
  • A standard space is 9 ft by 20 ft at 90 degrees (§ 770-109F)

Driveways must be hard surfaced; gravel is prohibited (§ 770-109A). One commercial vehicle up to 6,000 lbs, owned by an occupant, may be kept per dwelling unit (§ 770-28).
