How wide can my driveway be in Royal Oak, and how many can I have?
One driveway per dwelling, at least 8 ft wide. The ordinance allows a single driveway for each dwelling, sets a minimum width of 8 ft, and requires a hard surface (§ 770-105F(1)).
Related rules to keep in mind:
- The surface must be asphalt, concrete, or approved permeable pavement; gravel, loose aggregate, stone, unreinforced grass, and soil are prohibited (§ 770-109A)
- Ribbon driveways, two hard-surfaced wheel tracks, are allowed (§ 770-105F(1)(c))
- One side yard of at least 8 ft must remain open and suitable for a driveway on One-Family, One-Family Large Lot, and Two-Family lots (§ 770-34D(6)(c); § 770-35D; § 770-36D)
- Front-yard parking layouts such as horseshoe or T-shaped drives need an Engineering Department permit and qualifying lot dimensions (§ 770-105F(1))
The ordinance states a minimum width rather than a maximum, so confirm any wide or second curb cut with the Engineering Department before building.
