Can I park in my front yard in Royal Oak?

Not on an ordinary lot. For one- and two-family homes, required parking goes in the side or rear yard on the same lot. Front-yard parking is allowed only by Engineering Department permit, and only in two configurations (§ 770-105F(1)):

  • Horseshoe driveway: the lot must be at least 60 ft wide, with a front yard at least 35 ft deep and 2,100 sq ft in area
  • T-shaped driveway: the lot must be at least 50 ft wide, with a front yard at least 30 ft deep and 1,500 sq ft in area

Smaller lots do not qualify, so most standard 50 ft Royal Oak lots cannot add a horseshoe.

Whatever the layout, the driveway surface must be asphalt, concrete, or approved permeable pavement; gravel and loose stone are prohibited (§ 770-109A). For permit details, contact the Engineering Department, or the Planning Division at 248-246-3280 for zoning questions.
