How tall can my fence be in Orion Township?

It depends on where the fence stands, and Orion Township's rule is stricter than most neighboring cities. A fence that encloses your lot along the lot line is capped at 4 feet (Section 27.05.H.1). A privacy or decorative fence can reach 6 feet, but it may not stand in any required yard setback area (Section 27.05.H.2).

Because required setbacks run along every lot line, the 6 foot option generally cannot sit on the property line itself. On an R-1 lot, for example, the side setbacks are 10 feet, so a 6 foot privacy fence would need to stay out of that strip under the rule as written.

Two more limits apply. Within the corner sight triangle, nothing over 30 inches is allowed (Section 27.03.G). Barbed wire and sharp toppers are prohibited (Section 27.05.H.8).

Lots over 2 acres with at least 200 feet of frontage outside a recorded plat are excluded from these rules entirely (Section 27.05.H.4). The setback reading has real consequences for fence placement, so confirm your plan with the Building Department at 248-391-0304 before you buy materials.
