What size shed can I build in Macomb Township?
It depends on your lot size. In the AG, R-1-S, R-1-E, and R-1 districts the accessory building table (Sec. 10.0331.5) allows, besides one 900 square foot garage: 150 square feet of accessory building on lots of 10,000 square feet or less, 400 square feet on lots of 10,001 to 20,000 square feet, 900 square feet on lots from 20,001 square feet to 1 acre, 1,400 square feet across up to two buildings on 1.01 to 2 acres, 1,800 on 2.01 to 3 acres, 2,400 on 3.01 to 4.99 acres, and 3,000 square feet on 5 acres or more. Height caps rise with lot size from 12 feet to 22 feet, measured to the average height between eaves and ridge.
Sheds go in the rear yard only and must sit on a rat wall at least 4 inches wide and 24 inches deep with a 4 inch slab (Sec. 10.0331.2; Sec. 10.0311.E.6.d). A shed under 80 square feet and no more than 10 feet tall does not need a township building permit, though setbacks still apply (Sec. 10.0331.12). Shipping containers and truck trailers are prohibited as storage structures in every district (Sec. 10.0331.8).
