What types of fences are not allowed in Rochester Hills?
Several types are banned outright.
- Fabric fences are prohibited (§ 138-10.107.C.4).
- Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited on residential property (§ 138-10.107.C.4).
- Electric fences are prohibited, with one exception for approved animal containment (§ 138-10.107.C.5).
Height and placement rules work like prohibitions too. On residential property, no fence over 6 feet in side and rear yards, and no obscuring fence over 3 feet between the front of the residence and the front setback line (§ 138-10.107.C.2, § 138-10.107.C.3). On non-residential property the cap is 8 feet, or 10 feet for ornamental security fencing at Planning Commission discretion, and no fencing may sit in a required front yard (§ 138-10.107.D.2, § 138-10.107.D.6).
A hedge placed to act as a barrier counts as a fence and follows the same rules (§ 138-13.101).
