Can I put a fence in my front yard in Rochester Hills?
Yes, but only a low one. Fences up to 3 feet tall are allowed in required front and side-street yards (§ 138-10.107.C.3). No obscuring fence over 3 feet may stand between the front of the residence and the front setback line (§ 138-10.107.C.2).
On a corner lot, the fence must also respect the corner clearance rule. Within the 25 foot sight triangle at the intersection, nothing may rise above 30 inches (§ 138-5.204).
Taller fences belong behind the front of the house. In side and rear yards the limit is 6 feet, and the fence may not extend closer to the front lot line than the front of the dwelling or the minimum front setback, whichever is less (§ 138-10.107.C.2). A hedge placed as a barrier counts as a fence under the same rules (§ 138-13.101).
