How much parking does a house need in Ferndale?
One space per dwelling unit. Ferndale's residential minimum is 1 space per unit for everything from a single-unit house through multiple-unit buildings and live/work units (Parking Manual, referenced by Section 7.07.A). That is lower than what neighboring cities typically require, which is often two spaces per home.
Related rules:
- Accessory dwellings require no parking at all; the Parking Manual row for ADs is empty (Parking Manual)
- Bicycle parking is 0.5 spaces per unit (Parking Manual)
- A standard space is 9 ft by 20 ft (Section 7.03.D)
If the published minimum does not fit your project, an applicant may propose a different number with a parking study reviewed by the CED Director (Section 7.07.A). Note also that lawn parking is prohibited (Section 7.03.B). For project-specific counts, contact CED at 248-336-4370.
