Can I run a business from my home in Orion Township?

Yes, as a home occupation, and Orion Township is more permissive than several neighboring cities. Home occupations are permitted by right in any residential dwelling (Section 5.01; Section 6.01), subject to the Section 27.02.B standards:

  • Up to 30 percent of the dwelling's floor area may be used, a relatively generous share.
  • One non-resident employee may work at the house at a time, with the name and address on file with the township (Section 27.02.B.10).
  • Visitor and delivery traffic is capped at two extra vehicles at a time, only between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. (Section 27.02.B.5).
  • No outdoor display or storage, no change to the home's residential character, no nuisance, and no unusual utility loads.
  • Signage is one non-illuminated nameplate up to 1 square foot on the wall (Section 27.02.B.8).
  • Nothing produced, manufactured, stored, or distributed at the house may be a product whose handling is regulated by state, county, or federal law (Section 27.02.B.11 to 14).

The business belongs in the dwelling itself. Accessory buildings may not host commercial operations other than home occupations as defined in Article II, and how much of your garage the township will accept is an interpretation call (Section 27.02.A.7). If clients will visit or you want the garage as a shop, describe the setup to Planning & Zoning at 248-391-0304 ext. 5000 first.
