Can I park an RV or boat at my house in Novi?

Short-term, anywhere on your property: recreational equipment and trailers may be parked anywhere on a residential premises for up to 72 consecutive hours for loading, unloading, trip preparation, or minor maintenance. Taking the rig away for less than 24 hours does not restart the clock, and the same equipment reappearing within 7 days counts as a violation (Section 5.1.1).

For longer storage, height decides the spot. Equipment under 6 feet tall may be stored in any required side or rear yard; appurtenances up to 3 square feet in cross-sectional area may extend above the 6 foot line (Section 5.1.2). Taller equipment must go in the rear yard or a nonrequired interior side yard, following the accessory building rules for setbacks (Section 5.1.3).

Housekeeping rules apply either way (Sections 5.1.4 through 5.1.7): the equipment must be owned by or registered to the occupant, carry current license and registration, be kept in good repair, and never be used for living quarters or hooked to water or sewer. At most one motor home may be stored on any residential premises. Winter storage of boats and docks on lakefront lots is separately allowed from October 1 to May 31 (Section 3.35.10.C).
