What signs can my business have in Canton Township?

Canton rewrote its sign article in January 2026, and the new rules are notably uniform (Article 6A.00, Ord. of 01-13-2026).

  • Ground sign: one per road frontage with access, up to 32 square feet, 6 feet tall, 12 feet long, set 10 feet back from lot lines and driveway edges. The same numbers apply in every commercial, office, and industrial district (Section 6A.09.G).
  • Wall sign: area equals 1 square foot per linear foot of your facade or tenant frontage, capped at 100 square feet if the building sits within 150 feet of the right-of-way and scaling up to 300 square feet for deep setbacks. Corner and end units earn 150 percent, and rear facades on shared circulation drives can add a 10 square foot sign (Section 6A.09.M).
  • Banners: only over a conforming sign or in a conforming wall sign area, permitted in blocks of up to three weeks, 18 weeks total per year (Section 6A.09.B).
  • Window signs need no permit (Section 6A.06.L). Awning, canopy, projecting, portable, and under-canopy signs each have their own tables in Section 6A.09.

Prohibited outright (Section 6A.05): electronic message centers, billboards, pole signs, roof signs, flashing or animated signs, feather flags, inflatables, searchlights, and any type not expressly permitted. Permits come from Building and Inspection Services (Section 6A.12); multi-tenant centers can seek a master sign plan with modified standards (Section 6A.10); variances go to the ZBA (Section 6A.14). Nonconforming signs may continue but not expand (Section 6A.11).
