Canton Township replaced its sign article in January 2026 (Article 6A.00, Ord. of 01-13-2026). Signs need a permit through the Building and Inspection Services Division unless listed in Section 6A.06 (window signs, flags, noncommercial yard signs, under-canopy signs, and similar).
Highlights:
- Ground signs (Section 6A.09.G): one per road frontage with access, up to 32 square feet, 6 feet tall, and 12 feet long, set back 10 feet from lot lines and driveways, in every district group from RA through GI. Electronic message centers are prohibited entirely (Section 6A.05.K).
- Wall signs (Section 6A.09.M): in commercial, office, and industrial districts, area scales at 1 square foot per linear foot of facade, capped at 100 square feet within 150 feet of the right-of-way and up to 300 square feet for deep setbacks; corner or end units earn 150 percent. Nonresidential buildings in residential districts get 24 or 50 square feet (footnote 4).
- Yard signs (Section 6A.09.O): residential sites may hold signs of up to 6 square feet each and 24 square feet total, 4 feet tall, 5 feet off lot lines, unlighted.
- Entranceway monument signs for subdivisions follow their own table with masonry base requirements (Section 6A.09.F).
- Banners are allowed only over conforming signs or wall sign areas in commercial and industrial districts, for up to 18 weeks per calendar year in permits of up to three weeks (Section 6A.09.B).
- Prohibited outright (Section 6A.05): billboards, pole signs, roof signs, animated and flashing signs, electronic message centers, feather signs, inflatables and festoons, searchlights, murals on private buildings, and any sign type not expressly permitted.
Sign variances go to the Zoning Board of Appeals (Section 6A.14). Master sign plans can modify standards for multi-tenant centers (Section 6A.10).
