What are the rules for a swimming pool in Shelby Township?
An in-ground pool must observe a 10 foot setback from the rear and side property lines (Section 5.2.A.4.k). Pools count as accessory uses, so the general accessory rules apply: rear yard placement and coordination with the other rear-yard coverage limits (Section 5.2.A.4).
Pool fences and enclosures must comply with the Michigan Building Code standards, which the Fence Ordinance adopts for any fence or enclosure around a swimming pool (Code of Ordinances Sec. 10-322.b). For commercial or club pools the Zoning Ordinance is stricter: a swimming pool at a private recreation facility needs a 6 foot protective fence with a controlled gate (Section 4.7.C), and golf course pools sit 200 feet from adjoining property (Section 4.5.B.1).
Building permits for the pool itself and barrier requirements are administered by the Building Department (586-731-5100), so confirm the current barrier code before installation.
