How tall can my fence be in Macomb Township?

Up to 6 feet for a privacy fence on or parallel to your rear or side lot lines, and up to 54 inches for any other fence type in those locations (Code of Ordinances Sec. 14-26.d). The same section states a 4 foot minimum height for fences placed on a property line, an unusual floor that reads as written in the ordinance.

Fences may not extend into the front yard on interior lots; they may run along the front building line and through side and rear yards (Sec. 14-27.a.3). On corner lots the fence may extend into the street-side yard. Nothing sight-obscuring may stand in the 20 foot clear vision triangle where rights-of-way, drives, or walks intersect (Sec. 14-27.a.2).

Every fence needs a permit from the Building Department before construction, including rebuilds of existing fences (Sec. 14-25). Prohibited types include masonry walls, wire fences, electric fences, and anything with barbed wire or spikes (Sec. 14-26.c). If your plan does not fit these rules, the Zoning Board of Appeals can grant fence variances (Sec. 14-29). Confirm details with the Building Department at 586-992-0710.
