Do I need a permit for a fence in Macomb Township?
Yes. It is unlawful to construct a fence on subdivision property in Macomb Township without first obtaining a permit from the Building Department (Code of Ordinances Sec. 14-25.a). You apply on the department's form, pay the fee set by the Township Board, and the department reviews the proposal against the fence ordinance. Existing fences may not be enlarged, rebuilt, or reconstructed without a new permit, and replacements must meet current standards (Sec. 14-25.a.6).
The township may also review the grade along the bottom of the fence and can require surveyed elevation grades where topography is an issue (Sec. 14-25.a.7). If the application is denied, you have 10 days to appeal to the Zoning Board of Appeals through the Planning Department (Sec. 14-25.a.4). In multiple-family and nonresidential districts, site plan approval from the Planning Commission comes first (Sec. 14-24.b).
