How close to the property line can I build a shed in Orion Township?

For the rear lot line: 10 feet, for any detached accessory building (Section 27.02.A.4, amended 06.19.23).

For the front and side lot lines, a detached shed or garage must meet the same setbacks as your house. In R-1, R-2, and R-3 that means 10 feet from each side line; in SF, SE, and SR it means 20 feet (Section 6.04; Section 5.04; Section 27.02.A.4).

Special cases from the same subsection:

  • No detached accessory structure may extend past the leading edge of your house into the front yard.
  • Corner lots: the structure must meet the principal setbacks on the street sides.
  • Multi-frontage lots whose rear line abuts a major thoroughfare or collector road lose the 10 foot rear allowance and revert to full principal setbacks.

An accessory building may not sit in any dedicated road or easement right-of-way (Section 27.02.A.11), and it cannot go up before the house does (Section 27.02.A.2). Measure from the actual lot lines, not the fence, and confirm with the Building Department at 248-391-0304 if your lot is irregular.
