Can I keep chickens, bees, or livestock in Sterling Heights?
Mostly no for chickens and livestock, yes for hobby bees. Agriculture is a permitted use in the one family districts, but on any parcel under 8 acres there may be "no raising of livestock, fowl or other animals" (Section 3.01.B). Since almost every residential lot in the city is far below 8 acres, backyard chickens are effectively prohibited on standard lots.
Hobby beekeeping is different: it is a permitted accessory use in all zoning districts, subject to the keeping requirements in the City Code (Section 28.19A, adopted by Ord. 278-KKK in 2024).
Horses are possible only on large parcels: private stables require 2 acres of land per horse (Section 3.03.B), and commercial riding stables need a 20 acre site with special approval (Section 3.02.H). Chapter 8 of the City Code adds animal control rules on top of zoning. If your parcel is unusually large, confirm the specifics with the Office of Planning at 586-446-2360.
