Can I run a business from my home in Canton Township?

Yes, within the home occupation rules, and Canton's are stricter than most neighboring communities on staffing: only residents of the dwelling may be engaged in the business; no outside employees may work on site (Section 2.06.A.4).

The other limits (Section 2.06):

  • At most one extra vehicle at a time, and no more than ten customers or clients per day (Section 2.06.A.5).
  • No outdoor display or storage, no change to the residential appearance, no nuisance, and no equipment changing the structure's fire rating.
  • One non-illuminated wall nameplate up to 1 square foot (Section 2.06.A.7).
  • The business must stay in the dwelling; garages and sheds may not host commercial operations (Section 2.03.D.4).

Section 2.06.A.9 bans a long list outright, including medical and professional practice offices (doctor, lawyer, accountant, insurance, real estate), salons and barbershops, vehicle repair, landscaping and snow removal businesses, contractors, antique shops, restaurants, and bed and breakfasts, and the list is expressly not exhaustive.

A quiet computer-based business fits comfortably. Anything with regular clients, employees, or equipment should be described to Planning Services at 734-394-5170 first.
