Can I run a business from home?
Yes, as a home occupation under UDO Sec. 3.3, with a development permit. The business must be clearly incidental and secondary to the residential use of the dwelling and must be operated by a resident. No more than 25 percent of the dwelling's gross floor area may be used for the home occupation. Per the Town's homeowner permit guidance, you may employ up to 2 full-time-equivalent non-resident employees on site, and no signage, goods, or advertising may be visible from outside the dwelling. Home occupations are permitted only as an accessory use, not a stand-alone business use, in the residential and mixed-use districts. Start by confirming your zoning district on the current Official Zoning Map or with the Planning Department at 919-435-9510.
