Can I run a business from my home in Shelby Township?
Yes, if it stays invisible from the street. Home occupations are allowed in the one-family residential districts under Section 4.2: only people who live in the home may work in it, no more than 20 percent of the dwelling's floor area (excluding the basement) may be devoted to it, and there can be no visible change to the house, no outdoor storage, and no equipment unusual for a residence.
The operating limits are specific: no commercial sales on premises except goods the occupation itself produces, no traffic or parking beyond normal residential levels, and hours between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. (Section 4.2.F, G, I, J). The business must stay inside the dwelling itself; garages, sheds, breezeways, porches, patios, and pool areas are all off limits (Section 4.2.E).
Selling firearms from home is possible only with both federal ATF licensing and Shelby Township Police Department approval (Section 4.2.L, added by Ord. No. 212.129). If your business needs employees, customer visits, or a sign, it belongs in a commercial district.
