Can I run a business from home?
Yes, as a home occupation under LDO Sec. 9-1255(p)(4), with a Town-issued home occupation permit ($50 fee). The rules differ depending on whether the parcel is inside Fuquay-Varina's corporate limits or its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ). Inside Town limits, the maximum floor area used is 250 square feet, only residents of the dwelling may work in the business, onsite advertising and signage are prohibited, and only 1 business vehicle is allowed on the property. In the ETJ, the maximum floor area is 750 square feet, one additional non-resident employee is permitted, one small non-illuminated ground sign (up to 4 square feet, 4 feet high) is allowed with a separate sign permit, and 2 business vehicles are allowed. Everywhere, visitors and customers are limited to 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., the home cannot be physically altered for the business, only one home occupation per property is allowed, and certain use types (restaurants, auto repair, medical offices, slaughterhouses, and others) are prohibited outright. Confirm whether your parcel is inside Town limits or the ETJ with the Planning Department at 919-552-1429.
