A home occupation permit is required ($50 fee, non-transferable, address-specific). A home occupation must be clearly incidental and secondary to the residential use, must not change the character of the home or alter its exterior, and may operate from the principal dwelling or an accessory structure. Maximum floor area used: 250 square feet inside Town corporate limits, or 750 square feet in the ETJ. Employees: inside Town limits, only residents of the dwelling may be employed; in the ETJ, one additional non-resident employee is also permitted. Signage: prohibited inside Town limits; in the ETJ, one non-illuminated wood ground sign up to 4 square feet per side and 4 feet high is permitted with a separate sign permit. Vehicles used for the home occupation: 1 inside Town limits, 2 in the ETJ. Visitors and customers are allowed only between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Only one home occupation per location is permitted, and a list of prohibited use types (adult uses, slaughterhouses, funeral homes, restaurants, auto repair, medical offices, and others) applies regardless of location. Confirm whether a parcel is inside Town limits or the ETJ with the Planning Department at 919-552-1429 before relying on a specific figure.
